<lj:music>Potential Breakup Song</lj:music>

This past weekend was the first time I'd been home in three weeks. I saw Spiderman 3 and thought it was incredibly cheesy, but entertaining overall. My brother and I went to a co-worker's house on Friday and played Monopoly until 3AM. I totally won. For Mother's Day, I made my mom a card with construction paper, glue, glitter, and markers. A second grader could have done a better job, but it's the thought that counts.

Saturday, I watched UCLA softball on TV and realized how much I want to be a part of the team. I'm looking into an equipment manager position, which would allow me all of the UCLA athlete benefits like priority enrollment, tutoring, free Adidas stuff, etc. Plus, I get to hang out and travel with the team. I would have to be at every practice and every game, which is fine. Sometimes I feel like I have too much free time for my own good anyway. I'm just hoping the manager position doesn't conflict too much with marching band, because I'm definitely doing band again next year.

At home, I discovered that my neighbors have about six mules. I don't exaxctly live in the boonies, Arcadia is a pretty busy suburb, so it's funny for me to think that my neighbors have a farm in their backyard. The mules are very friendly, but smell awfully bad. I captured a few intimate moments with my camera:

I am terrible at keeping journals... both offline and online. I realize that I tend to keep things to myself, which isn't always a good thing. So, here I am to keep the 3 people that read my LJ updated on my life.

This second quarter has been quite a turnaround for me. Socially, I feel much more comfortable. I have friends that I can actually trust to be able to call up and do things with, as opposed to the "aquaintences" I had up until now. I have a great roomate set for next year, which is something I was so scared about. I was originally going to have the school pick a random roomate for me, but I really think God saw how much I was struggling and decided to step in. Now I'm going to be rooming with the one person I feel closest to here at the school. And hopefully if all goes to plan, we'll be staying in a much nicer dorm with a beautiful view of Westwood and the ocean! I'm also getting a lot closer to my bible study group, which has really been helping me out.

I'm taking a speech class next quarter, which I'm hoping will help me to open up more (plus it's a requirement for the major I want to pursue). What I really want to do is to somehow get involved with the UCLA softball team. I was so dedicated to softball in high school, and now I'm attending a school that boasts one of the best teams in the country. Thing is, I can't expect to get involved if I never speak up to the players and coaches. I actually went all the way to Palm Springs last weekend just to see UCLA play against Northwestern and Texas play Oregon State in a tournament. Texas is home to one of my favorite softball players, Megan Willis.

So socially, things are going well. Academically, however, I've been slipping. Not to the point of failing, I couldn't possibly let myself get to that level, but my study habits have really suffered. I have trouble focusing on homework and tend to procrastinate everything until the last minute. It all worked out fine for me last quarter because my classes were a little easier and I was able to type up a paper the night before it's due and still get an A or B. It also worked for my History paper during this current quarter: I wrote a 5 page paper the night before it was due and pulled out with a B. So I used the same method for my Communication Studies paper that was due today. We've had the prompt for nearly 2 months, and I just started yesterday. Turns out I couldn't do it this time. I didn't even turn it in. I'm going to hand it in tomorrow and lose points for being late. I suppose this is a wake up call for me. This is also coming two weeks before finals, so I still have a chance to make things better.

Okay, so that's school. My birthday was Saturday. I had a great weekend. Friday was my family birthday dinner. My mom had asked me earlier in the week what I wanted her to make for my birthday meal. I think I said ham and potatoes with cornbread, but come Friday my mom surprised everyone with catered Chinese food. I thought that was hilarious. After dinner, my mom decided to give me my first gift. I didn't really ask for any specific gifts this year, so I didn't know what to expect. I was very pleasantly surprised to unwrap 2 orchestra-level tickets to Wicked at the Pantages Theatre! I'm going March 28, and I can't wait! Yay for moms.

On Saturday, my actual birthday, I took a mini road trip with Sharon to visit Zainub at UCSD. We went to the beach at La Jolla Shores, and then went shopping in downtown La Jolla. It was such a beautiful day, it didn't even look real. That night, we met up with my oldest brother Adam in San Diego for dinner at CHILE'S! The waiters sang "Happy Birthday" to me and gave me a free milkshake... yayuh.

I'm going to stop typing now, because this is just getting way too long. But first, a link to pictures from my weekend:
My weekend was spent in South Bend, Indiana for the UCLA vs. Notre Dame football game. All of the fans were surprisingly very supportive of our school. They kept telling us that we played a great game, that they loved the band, and that they hoped we had a good time. And what a great game it was... we were winning the ENTIRE game, up until the last 27 seconds. Notre Dame came back and scored to win 20-17.

So today was pretty crazy. We arrived at LAX around 4:30 AM for our 6:05 AM flight. At the gate, we find out that our flight is actually scheduled for 6:05 PM.

Go figure.

But thank God, we managed to get squeezed onto a 6:00 AM flight to Denver and then Chicago. The catch was that we had to sit seperately. So I was all by my lonesome for 4 hours. But it didn't matter, we got to Chicago by 1:30 in the afternoon, and all was right in the world.

So far, Chicago pretty much kicks ass. Sure, it smells a little and it's full of terrible drivers (people honk ALL THE TIME for no reason), but everything is just so BIG. The buildings seem to go on forever, I absolutely love it.

Here is my picture of the day:

That's at Navy Pier. My mom kept comparing it to Santa Monica Pier, but there's really no comparison. Navy Pier is only 10 years old, and it's clean. Santa Monica is old, rusty, and not to mention totally HIV Positive.

Saturday, July 22 2006 will go on the record as one of the hottest, if not the hottest day in the San Gabriel Valley. And the humidity made it practically unbearable. Lucky for me, I was working the cash register inside the store with the air conditioning. Even still, every single conversation I had with the customers involved how miserable they were and how they've never seen weather here like this, etc etc. It made me fear the outside world... like the Midwest.

So throughout this one day, we had rain, huge gusts of wind (almost tornado-like), nearly a power outage with lights flickering throughout the store, freezers breaking down because of the heat, and to top it all off: a nice big chunk of TREE fell in the parking lot. A branch like 20 feet long broke off around 11:00pm. Thank God the store was closed and nobody parked near the area. They didn't clear it until this afternoon, so it was amusing to watch drivers make their way around it just to park their vehicles.

Today's weather was slightly cooler, but still wretched. And of course I was put on shopping cart duty. I probably lost ten pounds just from sweating. I went into the walk-in freezer after a cart run and nearly fell asleep.

But enough bitching about the weather. I finally got my laptop. A Dell Inspiron E1505. It's big, silver, sleek, and SEXY. Now if only I could get a reliable internet connection...

I have relatives visiting from Chicago right now. They have an 11-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl. The girl is at that age where she is ridiculously blunt about everything. For example, while she was getting her manicure yesterday, she said "The lady doing my mom's nails is prettier than this lady doing mine". And this morning she watched me put my makeup on and told me "You look way better with makeup". It's hilarious because however true they may be, I'm always taken aback when she says things. She also told me that if Eric wasn't my brother we would make a "cute couple". WHO SAYS THAT?!

But she's cute, she makes me laugh.

Oh, and did you know that it's spelled raspberry? I was searching for Prince's song, and couldn't find it because I kept spelling it "Rasberry Beret". That's the biggest thing I've learned this whole summer.

Y'know... it's the first day of Spring Break and I'm already thinking way too much.

I finally had my in-depth conversation with my mom about which college I should go to this fall. I'm working on my UCLA marching band appeal right now, which seems like it will give me a reasonable chance of getting accepted into the school. But is that what I really want? To go to a very liberal campus with thousands upon thousands of stereotypical college kids drinking, debating, and rioting over basketball games? I'm not saying that necessarily as a bad thing, it would just be very different.

...But I suppose that's what college is all about. I'm supposed to break out and get an experince. Plus, I'd love to riot over basketball games, haha.

My other option is so completely opposite of UCLA that I can't believe the decision between them is so annoyingly difficult. Point Loma has an even smaller student body than Arcadia High School. It's a Christian campus by the ocean with strict policies against drinking and causing trouble on campus. It's safe, kind of like I am. They have a great music program, but no marching band :(

My brother Adam lives half an hour away from Point Loma, and my brother Eric is going to school about half an hour away from UCLA. I know some students at both campuses. I've talked to the music directors at both campuses. I've visited both campuses. I LOVE both campuses.

AHHHHHH

ucla?

point loma?

Upon reminiscing about this past weekend, I have decided that this was the most fun I've ever had at a drum competition... ever. We had two great shows and even broke the 90's for our first score. Everyone in the group this year is so awesome, I don't remember laughing so much. I can't wait for Dayton.

Anyways, I have some pictures. They're pretty boring, at least until I can find some pictures that other people took. I barely took any.

Snares looking cool.

From the show itself:

Group shot

Nice footwork

Look closely... everyone on the right side is leaning together

From the bus ride:

Northern California is covered with these cool green hills

During the ride home. Kartrina looks funny...

No reason for this picture other than to emphasize that we were in the MIDDLE OF NOWHERE

... And a random picture of Nathan's feet from our competition last week.

Trader Joe's

My job can be physically difficult. I sometimes take in a bout 15 shopping carts at a time. Over the last 20 months of pushing in carts for Trader Joe's, I have finally come up with this:

Top 5 things people ask me while I’m out on a cart run at work:

5. Can I get you to do my housework?
4. Is that your workout session for the day?
3. Are you sure you don’t need help?
2. Isn’t there a boy inside who could do that for you?
1. Can you take one more? Please?

We got second at our drum copetition yesterday. I thought we had a great show, everyone is really starting to come together. I'm really excited for our Hayward regional this weekend. Eight-hour bus ride! Yyyyeeaahhhh!

SNARES

A nice view of the sections leader's bootys during awards. Shiny!

Check out this dude's page for a cool little video of the drum line, with a small feature on each section (the snare one is funny). It's the 3rd video down.
www.myspace.com/juniorvarsityfilms
